I rarely wear make up. This stems from my swimming career, as I didn’t see the point of putting it on when it was only going to get smudged under my goggles. If I’m going out somewhere special I’ll put some on…but admittedly last night I went to London to see Penn & Teller (famous magicians) at the Hammersmith Apollo and completely forgot to pack any! Unlike school, however, there’s no rules where I work saying that I can’t wear make up if I wanted to.
On a normal day I just use a mineral foundation (by lily lolo who do good shades for very pale people like me) and a bit of blusher. If I’m not wearing my glasses I’ll add a bit of mascara.
I think there is sometimes a perception that women in science are a bit frumpy but it isn’t always true. I’m happy to to be comfortable and scruffy but many of my female colleagues are very well turned out and groomed.
I use very little makeup. In general i use a basic Mac foundation and some lipgel most of the time and generally turn up in a pair of jeans and t-shirt to work in the lab. But i also go to a lot of meeting and conferences to give talks. I like to dress up and wear formal clothes then.
