Well fortunately I never managed to infect myself with anything I have worked with. One bug I have a lot of experience with ,Campylobacter (cam-pie-lo-back-ter), can make you very unwell indeed.
However, the most ill I have ever been was when I was 16 and I caught the flu. I had always thought that I had caught the flu, when actually I’d just had a pretty bad cold. But when I had the flu I got hot shivers, I couldn’t lift my arms or legs and I was barely conscious. So I missed a whole week of school being monitored in bed. Thankfully I survived and now have a better sense of what having the flu actually feels like.
The worse illness I’ve had was E. coli. Most types of E. coli are harmless, and it’s commonly found in our gut. However, the strain I had wasn’t the friendly sort, and to make it doubly worse, turned out to be resistant to the first set of antibiotics I was given – allowing it to spread even further. For something so small, it caused some of the worst and most awkward pain I’ve ever experienced.
