      Yes – some pathogenic micro-organisms are dangerous to work with. You wouldn’t usually want to deliberately handle infected samples or grow things you know could make you ill.

      The laboratory is set up so that it is as safe as possible. Everyone who works in the lab has lots of training so they understand all the risks, how to prevent anyone getting infected in the lab and what to do if anything goes wrong.

      It’s extremely rare for anyone who is following the safety rules properly to get an infection from working in the lab.
