I don’t work directly on antibiotic resistance, mainly because I focus on viruses, and antibiotics do not affect viruses. However, several of my colleagues at the University of Oxford are looking at antibiotic resistance in two major bacteria that are found in hospitals: Clostridium difficile and Staphylococcus aureus (which you may have seen referred to as MRSA). One of the things they’re trying to do in these bacteria is to use genetics to predict what antibiotics the bug is resistant and susceptible to, in order to better and more quickly target the infection.
